Gone But Not Forgotten

Arundel has numerous family burial grounds and many of the gravestones have inscriptions on them.  These inscriptions represent a fascinating piece of our past.  Here is a sampling:

Died Mar. 15, 1820

Behold all you who pass me by,

Sally, wife of James Wakefield

Died Mar. 6, 1829

AE. 31 yrs.

The year rolls round, and steals away

The breath that first it gave;

Whate'er we do, where'er we be,

We're traveling to the grave.

Joshua Curtis

DIED Oct. 2, 1831

AE. 24 ys. 5 m.

Sleep brother dear take thy rest,

God called you home he thought it best,

Twas hard indeed to part with thee,

But Chrits strong arms supported me.

Charles Wakefield

Died Feb. 7, 1849

AE. 25 yrs.

Dangers stand thick through all the ground

To push us to the tomb,

And fierce diseases wait around

To hurry mortals home.

Jane S. wife of Seth Storer

Died Feb. 15, 1858

AE. 35 yrs. 7 ms.

Alas she has left us, her spirit has fled

Her body now slumbers along with the dead

Her savior has called her to him

Be ye thus ready to follow her soon.

Susan dau. of John & Lydia Lunt

Died May 29, 1860

AE. 26 yrs. 6 mos.

Gently the passing spirit fled,

Sustain by grace divine;

Oh may such grace on us be shed,

And make our end like thine.

Leonard, Jr. son of Leonard & Aphia Hutchins

Died Aug. 6, 1874

AE. 34 yrs. 1 mo.

The labors done, securely laid

Within his last retreat;

Unheeded o're his silent dust

The storms of life will beat.

Louisa M., wife of Ezra H. Burnham

Died Nov. 5, 1890

AE. 66 yrs.

How sweet it will be in that beautiful land

So free from all sorrow and pain.

With songs on our lips and with harps in our hands,

To meet one another again.

James H. Son of Enoch T. & Caroline Coleman

DIED April 8, 1891

AE 31 yrs, 4 m's & 15 d's

Died Aug. 29, 1896

AE. 56 yrs. 1 mo.

One precious to our hearts is gone

The voice we loved is stilled.

The place made vacant in our hous

Can never more be filled.

Enoch T. Coleman

Died Oct. 5 1901

AE. 80 yrs. 2 mos. 17 days

Honest and upright and a kind father.

Sarah D. Hanscom

Died December 18, 1838

Age 25 yrs. 5 mos. 18 days

Thus fades our sweetest comforts here

Our dearest friends soon disappear.

When the loud call from God is giv'n

They sleep in death to wake in heaven.
